Lorenlowicz, Ivena
Signed
Hardcover 1st edition - Association copy being signed by DANILO BRUGAL ALFAU, Consul of the Dominican Repblic in 1947 for Canada. This book is sambumbia in the sense that it too epitomizes the Dominicans in their everyday affairs, as they work and dream and play. It doesn't concern itself with politics, or history, although the Dominicans are so conscious of their history that one cannot help being intimate with it. Blue boards with gilt lettering, rather heavy shelfwear and rubbing of covers, front hinge starting and some age toning of pages but actually not generally bad - a good reading copy. Dust jacket is in tatters but still present

Soft Cover
Very Good

Minor edgewear and a gift inscription on title page, otherwise a fine clean solid copy. From the publisher:The world of the West Indian defies boundaries, as disclosed with poignant realism in these fine stories set in Canada, the West Indies and New York. Dabydeen uses a language and style, distinctly his own, combined with humour and open-eyed wonder, to probe a diversity of situations and consider with understanding and generosity the foibles and idiosyncrasies of his characters and their remarkable endurance and will to survive. Long after the stories have been read, his characters will continue to haunt the mind."

Illlustrated

Hardcover 1st edition - Some shelf and edgewear, otherwise a good clean solid copy. Dust jacket is rubbed, otherwise still in good condition. During the presidencies of Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, the United States and the USSR acted out the world's tensions in the Caribbean, using Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic as puppets. What neither superpower bargained on was that their puppets would come to life. Red Heattells the gripping story of the men responsible for this rude surprise, including, from Cuba, the charismatic Fidel Castro and his mysterious brother Ra˙l; from Argentina, the ideologue Che Guevara; from the Dominican Republic, the capricious psychopath Rafael Trujillo; and from Haiti, Franšois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, a buttoned-down doctor with interests in Vodou, embezzlement, and torture. How did this handful of men, armed with little but words and ruthlessness, capture the world's attention during the 1950s and 60s? Alex von Tunzelmann shows her storytelling prowess yet again in a riveting narrative of clashing ideologies, the politics of fear, the machinations of superpowers, and - above all - the brazen daring of the mavericks who took them on. From the Hardcover edition.
